"The King's New Clothes" (1979)

Demo Song

Background Information

“The King’s New Clothes” is an early U2 song that was often played in concert in 1979. The song was introduced by that title in a concert in Cork City in 1979. However, by May 1980, Bono was now announcing the song with the same music but different lyrics as “The Dream is Over.” That song too was a demo that never ended up recorded.

We have taken an in depth look at U2’s pre-Island Records demo sessions in two parts. Part One dealt with 1978 – February 1979. Part Two dealt with the latter part of 1979 until early 1980. “The Kings New Clothes” is discussed in Part Two.
