"Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" (1987)
Demo Song
Background Information
Occasionally the song title “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” comes up in relation to demo recordings from The Joshua Tree. This song however is likely unrelated to U2 and has creeped into lists over the years due to the Pet Shop Boys.
In March 1991, the Pet Shop Boys, a UK synthpop duo, did a cover of two different songs mashed together. One of the songs was U2’s “Where the Streets Have No Name” and the other was Frankie Valli’s “I Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You”. The final song was titled “Where the Streets Have No Name (I Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You).” The song was released as a double A-Side single in the UK on March 11, 1991. The song was a hit in the UK, reaching number 4 on the UK charts, and is one of only a few covers of U2 songs to ever reach the charts. The single included a number of remixes of the song, and was later featured on two compilations, PopArt and Discography.
The song was never a recording by U2, and ends up linked to The Joshua Tree through this cover version by the Pet Shop Boys.
