"Spirits of the Rising Sun" (1984)

Demo Song

Background Information

“Spirits of the Rising Sun” is a song that was developed for The Unforgettable Fire.

In the exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame celebrating U2 in 2003, a number of notebooks identified as being Brian Eno’s were on display, however, we believe these may have been Daniel Lanois’ notebooks. In the notebooks a number of songs worked on for “The Unforgettable Fire” are identified. “Spirits of the Rising Sun” was one of the titles, but there is little additional information given.

The song is described in the notebooks as “filler”, and an alternate title is also given “African Sunrise”.

It is likely this song became “Three Sunrises”.
