"Stand Up" (2008)

Demo Song

Background Information

“Stand Up” is a song U2 worked on for No Line on the Horizon, which was eventually released under the name “Stand Up Comedy” on that album.

In a Reuters interview in October 2008 Bono talked about the Stand Up and Take Action campaign and how the campaign in 131 countries had moved him to start the creation of a song called “Stand Up”:

“It’s not finished yet but it’s inspired by this concept of stand up. It’s a little diamond, though,” Bono said, speaking by telephone from Los Angeles.

“It’s not a ‘let’s hold hands and the world is a better place sort of song.’ It’s more kick down the door of your own hypocrisy,” he said.

In January 2009, in a preview of the new album in Rolling Stone, we first learn the full name of this song, “Stand Up Comedy,” which is the name that it appears on the finished album.
