Breaking Waves…Mike Peters, Stories of Surrender, Live Aid 40…
Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2025-05-04)
We’ve had a number of questions about whether or not U2 have marked the passing of Mike Peters, former front man for the Alarm, and longtime friend of U2. To date, there has been no public remembrance, but today Jules Peters, the wife of Mike Peters shared “as the weeks unfold I’ll be sharing all the incredible tributes, including the incredible support in Michael’s last days from Bono & The Edge…All of this love has sustained me and the family and kept us strong.”
Mike Peters recently shared his own story through the first volume of a three volume autobiography, Love, released December 12, 2024. The first volume covered the years he toured with U2. We are sending our love to the Mike’s family and friends.
Last fall the BBC marked the fortieth anniversary of Band Aid, and now there are a number of upcoming specials about the 40th anniversary of Live Aid as well. On BBC Two (and the iPlayer) the behind-the-scenes story of Live Aid, Live Aid at 40 will be told including an interview with Bono.
Also in July will be Live Aid the Concert, which will include 6.5 hours of footage captured during the original concert and will feature highlights from both the London and Philadelphia concerts.
BBC Radio 2 will broadcast Live Aid: The Fans Story on Sunday July 13, 40 years to the day after the original concert. Although several artists will be interviewed, Bono / U2 are not mentioned in the program notes. Also included will be a number of fans who watched that day and their stories from the concert.
Outside of the BBC coverage of the Live Aid anniversary, the 40th anniversary will be celebrated with the release of the cast album of Just One Day: The Live Aid Musical. The album will be released on July 11, 2025, and will feature the UK cast on the recording. The songs included on the cast album will include “Bad” which is featured in the musical and runs 03:57. The recording will be available on 2 CD or 2 vinyl records. More information about the album can be found here.
We’ve been getting a few questions about Bono’s Stories of Surrender.
The film is due on May 30, and runs 1 hour and 26 minutes. It will focus on Bono’s Stories of Surrender performances, a mix of music and storytelling, which was filmed in 2023. Audio options will include Dolby 5.1 and Dolby Atmos mixes. Subtitles will be available in over 40 languages.
Apple TV+ runs free trials, usually offering seven days free, before a monthly subscription kicks in. If you cancel before the seven days are up you do not subscribe, however, a credit card must be provided to sign up.
The film will also be available in Apple Immersive for Apple Vision Pro. If you do not have the Vision Pro the version on Apple TV+ will be viewable on a regular television screen.
To accompany the film, a soft-cover version of Bono’s book will be published in the UK and Ireland, Canada, and the United States. The book is now titled Stories of Surrender and will be a shortened version of the original, edited to follow the flow of the film. There is a new introduction to the book by Bono, but otherwise all of the content was in the original hardcover release of the book in 2022. Stories of Surrender features a new cover as well for the book, shot in the elevator of the Beacon Theatre.
The book will be out May 20 in the UK and Ireland. It will follow a week later, on May 27, 2025 in both the US and in Canada.
A special showing of the film will make its debut at Cannes, but a date for this has yet to be announced.
We’ve mentioned the film Fountain of Youth a couple of times now, which debuts on May 23 on Apple TV+. The film has been using a new version of U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” in both of the trailers to date.
Another film we’re watching for is Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. The film by Rian Johnson, stars Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc. Each film to date has been named for a song. “Glass Onion” took its name from the Beatles song, and “Knives Out” is a song by Radiohead. Of the title Johnson said, “Pop is a very underrated album, and that song is very right for the title. But I’ve had ‘Wake Up Dead Man’ in my head for a long while, and I first heard the phrase in American folk music.”
This week it was revealed the third Knives Out film will make it’s debut later this year, likely this Fall. Johnson is hoping that it will be released extensively in movie theatres as well as via Netflix.
