Breaking Waves: U218 Orange Vinyl, Ecce Homo Launch, Anton’s Cover

Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2024-10-25)

When things are a little busier, we publish these “Breaking Waves” pieces to catch up on smaller pieces of news. There was also one earlier this week.

Today U2 released a ‘neon orange’ vinyl version of their 2006 album U218 Singles at Target stores in the USA. The record has the same track listing as the 2006 release, this is just a new pressing of the album. There have been some changes however.

The original releases of the album on black vinyl had an Island Records and a Mercury Records logo on the back cover. The Mercury Records logo is now gone. Instead the record is now released on Island Records and UMe (Universal Music). The neon is a bright orange in colour. The release comes with printed inner sleeves, which also now carry the Island logo.

The record no longer has any references to Music Rising. The Music Rising logo which used to be between the barcode and the track list has been removed. And the asterisk on “The Saints are Coming” in the track listing has been removed. (That lead to a statement that read ‘Proceeds from the track will be donated to Music Rising and will be used to work with musicians affected by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and the Gulf Region, as well as the Music Rising web address. This statement no longer appears.)

If you are interested in comparing to earlier releases, you can see our recent rundown here, or visit our discography entry for the album if you wish to see the back covers over the years.

No word yet if this will eventually see a release outside of the USA. If you do have an address in the USA, Target is once again taking orders for this release, and it is available in store.

Today was the release of Gavin Friday’s new album Ecce Homo, available now on digital services, on CD and on vinyl. The record include a song dedicated to Bono, Guggi and Lypton Village called “When the World was Young”.

Gavin was on U2 X-Radio today to discuss the album with host Jenny Huston. They discussed the album, the inspiration for “When the World was Young” and played a few tracks from the new album. You can listen back on demand if you are a SiriusXM subscriber.

Gavin will also be hosting his own show on the station tonight, and will appear on Sunday on John Kelly’s “Elevation”.

There was an album launch for Gavin’s Ecce Homo today at Tower Records in Dublin. Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton, as well as Ali and Morleigh were in attendance at the event. Guggi was also present.

You can order the album here. It is also available now on all streaming services. We’ve had a chance to listen here and are really enjoying the new songs.

Anyone remember when U2 let Anton Corbijn take over their Instagram account back in 2020 to celebrate the anniversary of All That You Can’t Leave Behind?

We do.

As his final image back then, Anton shared the cover of the How to Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb album. Anton wrote:

“This 2004 image above was my attempt to create a cover for the Atomic Bomb record, shooting the guys in a London photo-studio individually (analogue), put them together and retouch them digitally. I then painted around them which is what we see here. Kind of basis on which I subsequently wrote the album title and the name U2 a few times over each other by hand. I love using paint to get away from perfection. Obviously it didn’t get anywhere in terms of usage but I thought I share it regardless as it is the end of my takeover grin)) Thanks for sticking with these posts for 3 days, it was my pleasure!”

The photoshoot in London is also documented in his book U2 & I and is said to have taken place in 2003 in that book.

It wasn’t being used back then, but it is now.

U2’s release of “Happiness” yesterday included a lyric video, and a commercial release of the song. We’re updating as things are announced, with much of the updated information going into our discography entries. Below you can find some of the links to find more information about these upcoming releases.
