New “Atomic City” Single Drops June 21

Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2024-06-20)

U2 are releasing a new version of “Atomic City” this time with a remix by Tiësto. The new single arrives on June 21, 2024. On digital storefronts where you can still purchase music, the single is a single track version of the song, remixed by Tiësto which runs 04:43. On streaming services the release is a two track single, including the original mix of the song. (On YouTube, the remix is accompanied by the video for the studio song.) A high resolution version was available as well as standard quality, and this time the cover art is tinted green.

We’ve got some pages dedicated to information relating to this new release:

The release was limited on digital stores. On Apple services, the single was only released on their streaming service (Apple Music) and not in their digital storefront (iTunes). Likewise the release was not available through 7 Digital. It appears only limited stores have this item for sale, and where they do it is just the remix by itself.

This is not the first time that U2 have worked with Tiësto. In October 2012, the band collaborated with Tiësto on a new version of “Pride (In the Name of Love)” which featured on the Dance (RED) Save Lives compilation album. That mix included new vocals recorded by Bono.

“Atomic City” was first released as a digital single on September 29, 2023, the night U2 opened their run of 40 shows at Sphere in Las Vegas. A second single featuring a remix by Mike WiLL Made-It appeared on December 13, 2023. On February 5, 2024 another digital release featured two remixes by David Guetta. This remix by Tiësto is the fourth digital release of the song commercially.

Additionally there have been two physical singles released. The studio version of the song was released on a special glow-in-the-dark 7-Inch single on December 15, 2023. And for Record Store Day in April of this year a 10-Inch single on red vinyl was released featuring the “Mike WiLL Made-It Remix” as well as a live recording of the song taken from the band’s November 3, 2023 performance.

“Atomic City” was released as a one-off single, but The Edge has mentioned that it may make the cut for their upcoming album. We expect details of that album to be announced soon. The band are also expected to announce a one-hour film that is a mix of live performance and visuals from their concerts at Sphere, which will show at Sphere later this year. More information about the new album and the Sphere film as soon as we have further information ourselves.

The song “Atomic City” celebrates the city of Las Vegas where the band recently performed 40 shows to open the new venue, Sphere in 2023 and 2024. “Atomic City” is a nickname given to the city by the Chamber of Commerce in the 1940s, chosen to make Las Vegas look like the city of the future, and to draw in tourist attention. In the 1950s, nearby atomic bomb testing drew in spectators, and calendars were printed advertising the best locations to watch the explosions as well as planned dates and times. U2 performed the song each night of the 40 shows in Las Vegas.
