New U2X-Radio Show from Adam Clayton Debuts
Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2024-12-23)
Here’s a little surprise before the year ends.
U2 X-Radio debuted a new show by Adam Clayton today, called “Don’t Ask Me I’m the Bass Player”.
The show is described as “Adam Clayton invites fellow bass players, across all genres, to choose their essential tracks as musicians and share the stories behind them.” The first episode saw Adam Clayton speaking with Colin Greenwood, the bass player for Radiohead. The first episode debuted today ahead of the Philly Taggart show, and is also now available on demand. It is an hour long episode where Clayton and Greenwood discuss discovering bass, their favourite bass tracks, the drummer Larry Mullins, favourite plectrums and more. On demand it is listed under “Adam Clayton’s Playlist”, for now at least.
When Adam Clayton appeared at the Borris Festival of Writing and Ideas in June, his conversation with filmmaker Nick Broomfield was titled “Don’t Ask Me, I’m Just the Bass Player”. Today’s program on U2 X-Radio was the first time it has been used on the station as a title, although earlier in the year, bass player Mike Dirnt from Green Day appeared on Adam’s ongoing “Adam Clayton’s Playlist” show, doing a similar conversation and Adam mentioned the title during that episode. It appears this has sparked the idea for its own series. This is now being framed as its own show with the Colin Greenwood episode, including its own introduction voice over and show IDs. “Adam Clayton’s Playlist” continues, earlier this month there was a playlist episode focused on 2004 Rock and Roll songs.
Adam Clayton is the first member of U2 to host two different regular shows on the station. Previously Bono hosted the short lived, “Bono Calling” which ran for three episodes (two in 2020 and one in 2021, with the last co-hosted by Adam Clayton.) “Close to the Edge” featuring The Edge had sixteen episodes and ran from June 2020 to December 2022. “Adam Clayton’s Playlist”, his other show, has run for 39 episodes at this point, debuting on February 22, 2021 and still continuing with a new episode most months. Larry Mullen has not produced a show of his own, although we are told is involved behind the scenes.
The “Don’t Ask Me I’m the Bass Player” is the first new reoccurring show since the debut of Discothèque with DJ Pauli the PSM, which debuted in late 2023. That show was a continuation of the previous Discothèque show with Paul Oakenfold. The last true new regular program was the fan favourite, “U2X Stories” with Tassoula Kokkoris, which debuted October 2022.
U2 X-Radio debuted on SiriusXM on July 1, 2020 and has been on the air for 4.5 years. SiriusXM is a subscription based satellite radio service with multiple stations. The U2 station is available on channel 32. SiriusXM is available in Canada and the US only at this time.
