Rhythms Del Mundo 2024 Re-Release
Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2024-08-18)
On Friday, August 16, 2024 there was an quiet re-release of U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” for Rhythms Del Mundo on streaming services. U2 had originally appeared on the 16-track Rhythms Del Mundo Cuba album in 2006, but the album has not been available on streaming services. Now, a new 5-track EP also titled “Rhythms Del Mundo Cuba” has been released.
The original project saw popular mainstream songs being fused with Latin rhythm and vocals, put together by Buena Vista Social Club’s Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo. U2 gave permission for the studio version of “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” to be used, and it is mixed with new music and new vocals by Coco Freeman. The singer, born and raised in Cuba, was happy to take part in this project.
The proceeds from the original album, and this new EP went towards the organization Artists Project Earth (APE), an organization bringing education and information about climate change to the world. Coldplay, Sting and U2 have all agreed to take part in this re-release to raise awareness of climate change and to provide funds for natural disaster relief. The funds from the original album have funed 350 initiatives to date focused on climate change and disaster relief.

Kenny Young of APE, explains how the project came together: “The project was sparked off by the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. The idea came in to do a project with The Buena Vista Social Club to fuse their Latin sounds with Western artists and their familiar popular songs. The project evolved when more environmental disasters struck—the Asian Earthquakes and Hurricane Katrina. But the big picture was climate change. You can call these natural disasters but after all the research and scientific data, we know that we’re at least partly to blame for some of these disasters. Global warming is now in the news daily. If we don’t act in the time frame our experts give us, our grandchildren will curse us eternally.”
The song was produced by the Berman Brothers and Ron Oehl, and mixed by Kenny Young and Laurence Brazil. The EP is dedicated to the memory of Kenny Young.
The full track listing of the five track EP is:
