Show Details:
This is U2’s 29th show at Sphere in Las Vegas, and the fourth show of 2024, after taking a break for the holidays. The full listing of shows can be found in our show archive. These shows will be played without Larry Mullen who is healing from surgery to repair years of damage from drumming. U2 will once again be joined onstage by Bram van den Berg for these shows. Tonight Bono seems to be quite laid back and enjoying himself.
Bono comes out of “Zoo Station” with a “Thank you Pauli the PSM”, but skips his usual “Drive My Car” snippet tonight, going straight into “The Fly”. Introducing “Even Better than the Real Thing” Bono shares, “Where are we? Who are we? I know who you are. You’re the Edge. I know who you are. You’re Adam. And you? Not so sure. But I’m really enjoying getting to know you” as he turns to Bram.
After “Even Better than the Real Thing” Bono announces “Somebody needs to fix my little thing up here, thank you. I’ve had a wardrobe malfunction is that alright? I just want to take off all my clothes” and gets some help with his outfit on stage before continuing to introduce the Elvis Mega Church, The Sphere. It takes some time, and help from Rob on stage, to get him settled away before they continue. (Reports say that his earpiece had dislodged and needed to be taped back down.)
Bono introduces “One” by sharing “There is a huge and hungry darkness out there in the world. Tonight I’m told is Candlemas. There’s a light that shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot put it out” before asking the crowd “do you got a light?” It hearkens back to U2’s earliest shows where Bono would mime fumbling with a cigarette on stage asking the crowd the same question, with very different results. Sphere lights up with a sparkle of LED lights from electronic devices throughout the building. Candlemas Day is February 2, and clergy would bless candles, distributing them to people to cut through the dark days of winter. “One” ends with a lengthy rendition of “Love Me Tender”.
The Rolling Stones may have been on Bono’s mind today. During “Until the End of the World” shouts out “pleased to meet you” as he heads into the crowd, where he snaps a few photos using a phone from a fan on the front row. The line is from the Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil”. Later Bono includes the now regular snippet of “Paint it Black” but tonight it is mostly just humming the song. And again towards the end of “Wild Horses”, he sings “wild, wild horses, Rolling Stones”.
For “Tryin’ to Throw Your Arms Around the World” Bono takes his balloon for a walk, sharing, “What have got here? I’m holding onto a balloon, believing the balloon is going to get me home, believing that the balloon is going to make everything alright.” He walks around the stage, to reach a door at the back of the stage, where he realizes he doesn’t have a key. “Lost my keys. Edge? Anyone found my keys? Larry? Saoirse?”
The turntable section of the show starts out with “All I Want is You” which includes a nice snippet of Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic” to end the song. Bono shares, “The missus is in the house, I didn’t want to fuck that up” and then goes into the band introductions. Up next? “Desire” with a very quick snippet of “Not Fade Away”. The Rattle and Hum songs continue with “Angel of Harlem”. At the end of “Angel of Harlem” Bono breaks out a song that Ronnie Drew recorded, written by Bono and his friend Simon Carmody, “Drinkin’ in the Day”. “Love Rescue Me” finishes out the set. It is the first time that the full Rattle and Hum set has been done in 2024.
After a return to the Achtung Baby album, the main set ends with “Love is Blindness”. At the end Bono does a bit of “Viva Las Vegas” and then as was done on Wednesday night, Elvis Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas” is played during the intermission prior to the “Elevation” remix that is played as U2 return to the stage.
Bono is thankful to the crowd tonight. “Thank you! We are at journey’s end, inside Es Devlin’s Nevada ark. We know many of you have travelled a long distance to get us to our destination. Thank you. Some of you come from just around the corner, we met you last night, so thank you.” He then introduces “Beautiful Day”, “What a night. What a beautiful night. What a beautiful day. See how I did that?”
The “Lemon” remix that announces the start of the show started at 8:24 tonight. Many thanks to U2Log for sharing this evening.
