Bono sings “The Showman” as he enters the venue where his film, Bono: Stories of Surrender debuts, and later leads the crowd in a sing-along to “Pride” before speaking.

Bono’s film Bono: Stories of Surrender had it’s worldwide debut at the Cannes film festival, showing at Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes France on May 16, 2025. The film, based on Bono’s one-man show Stories of Surrender, saw Bono bringing his book Surrender to life in a combination of storytelling, and performance of songs. At the debut of the film, Bono was in attendance and while entering the venue “The Showman” from the new “Stories of Surrender“ EP was playing. Bono stopped on a number of occasions to sing along and could be heard singing by those gathered to watch the performers enter the show. Although present for the film, The Edge was not a part of this performance. Bono was accompanied by his wife Ali, and children Jordan and Eli. After “The Showman” played, the music switched to “Desire”, also from the “Stories of Surrender” EP, but Bono was not singing along to the second song that we are aware of.

After the film airs, and a seven minute standing ovation ends, Bono speaks to the crowd. Prior to starting to speak, Bono leads the crowd in singing the “oh oh oh” section of “Pride (In the Name of Love)”. As Bono finishes speaking, the crowd once again starts to sing.

The film showing was attended by The Edge, Paul McGuinness, Sean Penn, Kristen Stewart, Amal Clooney, Thora Birch, Helena Christiensen, Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), and Imogen Poots among others. Early in the evening, Bono, The Edge, and Sean Penn were photographed with seven members of the Ukrainian army, attending the event at Bono and Sean Penn’s invite. Bono himself was accompanied by a number of people who worked on the film including Director of Photography, Erik Messerschmidt; Editor, Lasse Järvi, Producers, Jon Kamen, Dave Sirulnick and Dede Gardner, and Executive Producers, Kelly McNamara and Jennifer Pitcher. Jacknife Lee, the musical director for Bono’s Stories of Surrender tour also accompanied the filmmakers as they entered the venue. Lee can be heard playing on the version of the song that was playing on the PA as the group entered the venue.
